Ostomy Surgery and the Perioperative Nurse

Purpose:
This program reviews various surgical indications for urostomies, ileostomies, and colostomies and explores fistula management as well. It also explores various surgical stoma creations and goes past the operating room to look at lifestyle and psychological adjustments people must face when dealt the ostomy card. The goal of this activity is to enhance the understanding of perioperative nurses on the fundamentals of ostomy creation and holistic care of the ostomate.

Objectives
- Review common conditions leading to ostomy surgery
- Illustrate stomal marking procedures
- Identify the physiologic and psychological implications of ostomy surgery
- Discuss surgical interventions resulting in ostomies
- Describe the usual medical/surgical management methods for fistulae
