Anesthesia Awareness: Patient Awareness Under General Anesthesia

Purpose:
In 2004, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) issued a Sentinel Event Alert calling for hospitals to educate their patients and staff on the characteristics to identify patients at risk for Anesthesia Awareness in order to identify and provide follow-up care for those who experience it. This course provides the learner with the knowledge needed to reach these goals within their healthcare organization. The learner will recognize the perioperative professional's responsibilities in pre-op, intra-op, and post-op areas.
Objectives
- Identify patients who may be at risk for Anesthesia Awareness
- Illustrate ways to reduce the risk of anesthesia awareness throughout the Perioperative experience
- Apply nursing interventions post operatively if a patient has experienced anesthesia awareness
