Vascular Surgery Series Part 1: Peripheral Vascular Disease and Carotid Endarectomy

Purpose:
The overall purpose of this series is to educate nurses about Vascular Surgery. This is course 1 in a 3 course series. This first course covers Peripheral Vascular Disease and the first of the associated surgeries: Carotid Endarectomy. Course 2 will cover the rest of the associated surgeries. Course 3 will cover the abdominal aortic aneurysms and the endovascular and open repair of them.
After studying this first course, the learner will have a more complete understanding of Peripheral Vascular Disease as well as a simplified but detailed description of the Carotid Endarectomy procedure than would enable a nurse who has never been involved in the procedure to understand the surgery and prepare his/her patient.

Objectives
- Explore Peripheral Vascular and Peripheral Artery Disease in terms of definitions, identifying signs and symptoms, and discussing risk factors
- Identify possible treatments with examples of each
- For the Carotid Endarectomy, identify the associated anatomy, discuss the steps involved in the procedure, discuss the circulating nurse's role in preparation, and identify post-operative risks to the patient during the recovery phase
