The Anatomy of a Lawsuit: Understanding the Medical Legal Process

Purpose:
Most healthcare professions hear about the stress and anxiety associated with malpractice lawsuits. The purpose of this presentation is to give healthcare professionals a better understanding of how our legal system works so they can adjust their practice and be better prepared in case they are faced with a lawsuit. This talk will give an overview of the major torts involved in malpractice, how a malpractice will proceed step by step and it will provide the participants with strategies they can use if they ever have to give a deposition or testify at a trial.

Objectives
- Examine the limitations associated with our legal system regarding lawsuits
- Identify the elements for the two major malpractice torts of Negligence and Battery
