Purpose:

It is estimated that approximately 1 case in every 20,000 to 50,000 cases that a patient will have a malignant hyperthermia (MH) crisis. The event is even more common in children. If the MH crisis is not identified and begun to be treated during the first few minutes, the patient can suffer serious harm or death. This course reviews MH etiology, signs and symptoms, and treatment. The four roles play by perioperative nurses during a MH crisis are also addressed. OR nurses should review MH crisis yearly to be able to respond more effectively during this life-threatening crisis.
