The TB Patient in the Perioperative Arena

Purpose:
This educational material is provided to assist the Perioperative nurse with basic knowledge about TB disease, transmission of the disease, and practices that are designed to protect healthcare workers from exposure to the disease. Some recommendations from CDC specific to the Perioperative care of the TB patient is also presented to provide practical solutions to assist with care of the TB patient during surgery.

Objectives
- Demonstrate basic understanding about Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Differentiate between active and latent TB infection
- Demonstrate how to protect from transmission of TB
- Illustrate workplace practices needed for protection from transmission
- Identify perioperative concerns and practices surrounding surgical patients with active TB disease
