Managing the Patient Receiving Local Anesthesia

Purpose:

When patients receive local anesthesia as the choice of anesthesia during a surgical procedure, an anesthesia provider is not present in the operating room. The perioperative nurse, OR RN, must be able to safely administer local anesthetics. This course will provide the perioperative nurse a review of local anesthetics, including side effects and dosage that the surgeon may order for the patient. The perioperative nurse will be able to discuss patient assessment and intraoperative monitoring according to AORN's "Recommended Practices for Managing the Patient Receiving Local Anesthesia".
