Lori Fuhrer, RN, CWOCN, CFCN

Current Position:

I work in an acute care setting as a pool CWOCN. I receive wound, ostomy, continence, and skin care consults for selected integumentary, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal issues and treat patients accordingly.

Experience:

My cllinical nursing experience for ostomy care in acute/outpatient care is as a Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN) for the past 5 years. It includes direct patient, family, and staff teaching about pre- and post-operative care. Once the ostomy surgery patient is identified and I receive the consult, a very close nurse/patient relationship is established and the patient is "seen through" a segment of their adjustment to the changes in body image to self-care. I also receive consults on patients with established ostomies who are in the acute care setting with problem ostomies, ie, skin problems that need treatment, as well as for teaching.
