Jan has been a staff nurse PACU; clinical nurse specialist, perioperative services; nurse manager, PACU; and Director, Surgical Services since 1982. She is a perianesthesia/perioperative nursing consultant in Louisville, KY. She has written numerous articles and chapters in the field of perianesthesia/perioperative nursing including: "Perioperative Pain Management" in Perioperative Services - Administration, Resource Management, and Patient Care, "Moderate Sedation/Analgesia" in Ambulatory Surgical Nursing, "Legal Issues" in Core Curriculum for Postanesthesia Nursing. and "Postoperative Care, Pain and Complications" in Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery. She has lectured and published extensively in the area of moderate sedation and perianesthesia nursing care. She is a Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) and has lectured on perianesthesia/perioperative issues internationally. Jan is past president of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in October, 1998. She is currently a Co-Editor of the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing and a PhD candidate at the University of Kentucky. Her book, Practical Guide to Moderate Sedation/Analgesia, co-authored with Donna Watson was published in spring of 2005. Her second book, co-authored with Cecil Drain, Perianesthesia Nursing: A Critical Care Approach was published in January, 2008.
